The Christmas gift I never gave you
sits in my blue chair under jackets, bags, and clutter
wrapped up in its original head shop paper.
I tried to display it in my room,
(the three-headed dragon incense burner—
I always thought it suited you.
Plus, yours is so old and boring)
but everywhere I put it,
it just didn’t seem to fit.
It clashed with the jewelry boxes
and empty pill bottles on my desk.
It just didn’t fit in well with the Bible
and hand lotion on my dresser.
It looked strange sitting between my Wii
and DVDs on top of my chest of drawers.
I guess there’s just no place for it here
so it sits wrapped, waiting for you
to come back so you can finally pick it up.
Better late than never, I suppose.
